Cape Town’s Strandfontein Pavilion has long been a familiar stop along the city’s coastline, but years of wear have left the once busy seaside hub in need of serious care.
Now the City of Cape Town is stepping in with a plan to revive the space, protect its heritage and make it more welcoming for residents and visitors.
Strandfontein Pavilion to get a revamp
The City has confirmed that the pavilion will undergo a full refurbishment funded by a multi-year capital budget from the Recreation and Parks Department.
Built in the 1980s as a day resort, the site includes the largest tidal pool in the southern hemisphere and remains a popular spot despite its ageing infrastructure.
The upgrade will focus on removing unsafe parts of the structure, restoring areas that can be saved, as well as improving access to the tidal pool and surrounding amenities.
The project also calls for a revamped amphitheatre, upgraded parking areas and refreshed landscaping to give the pavilion a cleaner, more inviting look.
Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, said the project has already cleared several key steps.
“The public participation process happened a year ago, where community members could share their insights directly with the project team. Those insights are being incorporated into the ongoing design process, and we look forward to breaking ground in the first quarter of next year.” Higham said.
Phase one of construction is set to begin in February 2026.
