Good news for Cape Town’s second airport

Cape Winelands Airport’s massive multibillion-rand upgrade has reached a key milestone with the appointment of WBHO as the official construction partner.

The development, one of South Africa’s largest aviation projects, is now moving into detailed technical planning as the project accelerates toward construction readiness.

Managing Director Deon Cloete said WBHO’s appointment marks the start of a crucial phase. With the contractor onboard, the team can refine timelines, final costs, and the engineering work needed to deliver Cape Town’s second airport.

Cape Winelands Airport takes another step forward

According to CapeTownETC, project insiders say that WBHO’s selection gives the project added credibility. The company is one of South Africa’s most experienced infrastructure builders, responsible for major dams, stadiums, highways, and aviation facilities.

WBHO director Russell Adams said the firm is honoured to join the project, calling it a rare and exciting greenfield development that will showcase the depth of South African engineering talent.

An R8-billion airport precinct

Once completed, the new Cape Town airport development will include:

  • A new boutique passenger terminal
  • A realigned and extended runway
  • Upgraded airside, navigation, and safety systems
  • Expanded cargo and logistics infrastructure
  • A refreshed general aviation precinct

Cloete said the vision is to build a world-class, environmentally responsible hub that boosts connectivity across the Western Cape.

A second major airport is expected to ease long-term pressure on Cape Town International and unlock new air routes into the Winelands.

The development has also attracted private investment interest, including support from Growthpoint Properties, which will help manage long-term assets within the precinct.

With WBHO now fully engaged, the technical development phase will determine when construction can begin. The airport team says further updates and project milestones will be announced soon.
