The leaders of South Africa’s 10-party Government of National Unity (GNU) have concluded a “highly productive” two-day retreat in Gauteng, unanimously affirming the coalition’s strength and commitment to its mandate.

The forum, attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President Paul Mashatile, and leaders including John Steenhuisen (DA) and Velenkosini Hlabisa (IFP), met at the Cradle of Humankind to review progress and address critical national issues.

Leaders acknowledged past difficulties, particularly around the 2025 budget process, but stated they had learned lessons and would ensure more effective consultation in future fiscal planning.

All parties reaffirmed their “full commitment to the GNU” as an instrument to advance the interests of all South Africans.

After 16 months in power, the GNU asserted it has provided stability and leadership, driving reforms in energy, logistics, and telecommunications, and maintaining macroeconomic stability.

Looking ahead, the leaders agreed to accelerate work and focus urgently on key areas, including:

  • Streamlining government and professionalising the public service.
  • Developing a food security plan to tackle hunger.
  • Intensifying the fight against gangsterism and organised crime.
  • Implementing a comprehensive response to illegal immigration.

The leaders agreed to establish a Clearing House Mechanism to manage policy differences and ensure the GNU functions optimally, and will meet regularly to provide strategic direction.
