- Gauteng authorities have launched a massive road safety campaign, with MEC Diale-Tlabela warning that those undermining traffic laws will be “dealt with without exception.”
- Recent inspections in Johannesburg and Tshwane led to the removal of dozens of unroadworthy taxis and the processing of over 2,000 fines for various violations.
- Beyond traffic offences, the GTI-led operations resulted in arrests for fraud and drink-driving, highlighting a broader strategy to eliminate lawlessness on provincial highways.
Gauteng’s MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has issued a stern warning to motorists, declaring a policy of “zero tolerance” for unroadworthy vehicles and reckless driving.
On Wednesday, she confirmed that enforcement teams are acting decisively to protect commuters and ensure the public transport sector complies with the law.
The Gauteng Transport Inspectorate (GTI), supported by a specialist team of 96 officers, has intensified stop-and-search operations across Johannesburg and Tshwane.
These high-impact interventions, conducted in partnership with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), aim to curb lawlessness and combat criminal activity on major transit corridors.
Recent operations between 8 and 14 December revealed significant non-compliance. Authorities discontinued 64 unroadworthy minibuses and issued over 2,000 infringement notices.
Officers also identified 168 taxi operators driving without valid licences and 147 vehicles lacking current licence discs, resulting in two vehicles being impounded.
In addition to traffic offences, the crackdown led to several arrests for serious crimes, including fraud, driving under the influence, and contraventions of the Immigration Act.
MEC Diale-Tlabela emphasised that road safety is non-negotiable, stating that sustained visibility will continue to reinforce the message that criminality on the province’s roads will not be tolerated.
