- The court highlighted the severity of his actions, delivering the sentence during the 16 Days of Activism campaign.
Another breakthrough in Gender-Based Violence cases has been recorded after a Gauteng serial rapist was sentenced to four life terms and 25 years’ direct imprisonment for a series of violent crimes that were committed between 2019 and 2023.
Thirty-three-year-old Daniel Nchawe Molefe raped four women aged 20, 30, 32 and 34.
The Pretoria High Court further sentenced him to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana detailed how the victims were attacked and violated.
“In the early hours of 27 October 2019, the 30-year-old complainant and her four friends were leaving a local tavern in Evaton. Molefe joined them by entering the back of a bakkie with the intent to go home.
While on their way, the car stopped in the middle of the road and Molefe dragged the complainant out before the car drove off. He then assaulted her, dragged her to a nearby bush, raped her and left,” said Mahanjana.
The second victim was raped in her home on 07 August 2022, while the third was attacked while walking with her aunt at a petrol station in Evaton and dragged to a nearby veld, where she was raped by Molefe and an accomplice.
The 32-year-old fourth victim was attacked while opening her door at her residence.
“She was approached by Molefe and his accomplice, who threatened her with a panga and demanded her phone and bank cards. They then dragged her to a nearby church, where both men raped her before fleeing,” Mahanjana added.
Police arrested Molefe on 01 October 2024, but he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The victims testified about the ongoing trauma, including difficulty sleeping and trouble relating to men, helping to prove Molefe’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
In sentencing him, the court emphasised the severity and prevalence of his crimes.
“Men should know that when a woman says no to sexual intercourse, it means no, and it is not an invitation for them to force themselves on her,” the judge said.
This breakthrough comes as South Africa observes the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.
