The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport’s enforcement unit, the Gauteng Transport Inspectorate (GTI), has impounded 84 unroadworthy vehicles during a week-long stop-and-search operation (3-9 November 2025).
The crackdown is part of a provincial strategy to boost road safety and compliance. Defective vehicles were found with issues like faulty brakes, worn tyres, and poor lighting.
The blitz highlighted high levels of non-compliance, particularly among public transport operators:
- 54 minibuses lacked valid licence discs.
- 40 minibuses were seized for safety/mechanical defects.
- 72 drivers were operating without valid licences.
A total of 1,539 infringement notices were issued.
MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela praised the GTI, reiterating a zero-tolerance stance on non-compliance to protect lives and restore order in the transport sector. The GTI, with 96 officers, will continue targeted operations.
