The Gauteng provincial government today launched a significant new initiative, the “Tswa Daar” campaign, aimed at tackling pervasive substance and alcohol abuse across its communities.
Premier Panyaza Lesufi officially launched the campaign at the Mehlareng Stadium in Tembisa. The initiative is described as a comprehensive effort to “save lives, restore dignity and build a healthier, safer Gauteng.”
Premier Lesufi announced that approximately 650 individuals battling addiction had voluntarily agreed to be screened and were being sent to rehabilitation centres today as the campaign kicked off. He stressed the government’s resolve to stop drug cartels from “ruining the future of children.”
The launch included the departments of Education, Social Development, and Human Settlements, providing a multi-faceted approach.
According to provincial government spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga, a range of services were immediately available on-site, including medical assessments, applications for rehabilitation admission, outpatient treatment, and profiling for job and training opportunities aimed at assisting young people.

Mhlanga urged residents, community leaders, businesses, and NGOs to join the effort to “break the cycle of substance abuse and drug addiction.”
