Gauteng law enforcement officials have discontinued 28 unsafe vehicles during festive season roadblocks over the past week, as authorities step up efforts to curb crashes on the province’s busy holiday routes.
The province currently records 255 455 unroadworthy vehicles on the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS) – the highest number in the country, according to officials.
Stern warning
Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics Kedibone Diale-Tlabela issued a stern warning to motorists, stressing that non-compliant vehicles will not be tolerated on the province’s roads.
“If your vehicle is not roadworthy, it will not be allowed on Gauteng roads. We are prioritising safety, not excuses,” she said.
Enforcement teams will impound vehicles that are found to be unroadworthy or operating without valid permits.
Motorists have been urged to repair defects, ensure they have the required documentation, and carry out safety checks before embarking on holiday travel.
Authorities say intensified operations will continue throughout the festive season as part of broader efforts to reduce accidents and fatalities.
