Garden Route city scores big Blue Flag beach recognition

Three of George’s most popular beaches have once again earned Full Blue Flag status for the 2025/26 season.

The announcement was made by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) during a national Blue Flag and Green Coast ceremony held in Port Alfred on 31 October.

This year, 97 sites across the country received recognition: 50 full-status Blue Flag beaches, 20 pilot sites, 5 marinas, 7 tourism boats, and 15 Green Coast locations.

George beaches gets full Blue Flag status

The three beaches awarded flags were Herold’s Bay, Victoria Bay, and Wilderness.

Beyond its three flagship beaches, the city added a new accolade to its coastal portfolio: Gwaing Beach has been certified as George’s official Green Coast site.

The Green Coast programme, also run by Wessa, celebrates less-developed stretches of coastline where communities work to protect natural habitats while promoting eco-friendly tourism.

According to the George Herald, local officials say the renewed flag status reflects years of ongoing investment in beach infrastructure, safety measures, and environmental awareness programmes.

  • Clifton 4th
  • Fish Hoek

The Blue Flag season runs from 1 December 2025 to 28 February 2026, during which all accredited beaches will display the iconic flag as a sign of excellence.
