The diplomatic tensions around the G20 Summit in Johannesburg has taken another turn, as French President Emmanuel Macron weighed in on the United States’ partial participation.
His comments arrived amid rising G20 Summit tensions sparked by President Trump’s earlier threats of a boycott.
MACRON ADDRESSES G20 SUMMIT TENSIONS
Macron did not hide his disappointment when asked about Trump’s absence.
“I have no comment, I do regret it, but it should not block us,” he said.
He stressed that global challenges need unity, especially when major economies disagree.
He added that nations must “be present, engage and work all together because we have so many challenges.”
He said during a brief media interaction on his arrival in South Africa for the G20 Summit on 21 November 2025.
FRENCH PRESIDENT PUSHES FOR COOPERATION
The French leader emphasised that cooperation remains the only path forward.
He highlighted the joint work on climate change, the global economy, poverty and geopolitics as essential.
Macron reminded the world that “the only way to address these challenges is through cooperation.”
His remarks follow a tense back-and-forth between the White House and South African officials after Washington accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of “running his mouth” for suggesting the U.S. had shifted its stance.
The U.S. is now sending only its acting ambassador for ceremonial duties.
AFRICA’S ROLE IN A SHIFTING WORLD AMID G20 SUMMIT TENSIONS
Macron used the moment to recognise Africa’s growing influence.
He highlighted his “respect for the African continent” and pointed to the continent’s rising demographic and economic potential.
He added that the world is “being reshaped” and urged humility from global powers.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2026
Despite the tension, Macron expressed hope that the U.S. will “join again,” as it hosts the summit next year.
