The Cape Winelands District Municipality has confirmed that a fire burning above Franschhoek remains out of control, as firefighters continue to battle difficult conditions on the ground.
Municipal spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto said crews faced significant challenges overnight, with strong winds driving the fire through the Assegaai-bos area.
The blaze has since jumped the Berg River, igniting new fires on the mountain above the river.
Access Challenges Hamper Firefighting Efforts
Otto said the combination of steep and uneven terrain and dense vegetation has severely restricted access for ground teams.
As a result, firefighting efforts have largely focused on protecting properties on surrounding farms, rather than direct suppression in inaccessible areas.
She confirmed that some residents have chosen to evacuate voluntarily as a precautionary measure.
Smoke Warning Issued
Fire authorities and partner agencies are expected to meet on Tuesday morning to discuss resource deployment and suppression strategies, including aerial firefighting operations.
Otto warned that water bombing and other suppression activities could result in heavy smoke in surrounding areas.
“Residents are advised that water bombing and other fire suppression activities may result in heavy smoke. It is recommended that windows and doors be kept closed, particularly for individuals who are sensitive to smoky air,” she said.
Monitoring Continues
Fire services said they will continue to monitor conditions closely as efforts to contain the blaze continue.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and to follow official guidance and updates.
