HEARTY home-cooked grub is especially comforting when temperatures drop – and it is cheaper than ready meals or takeaways.
If your kitchen skills need some work, there are ways to learn without burning too big a hole in your budget.

Follow these tips . . .
MEAL MENTOR: Bags Of Taste is a mentored two-week home-cooking programme on how to make healthy meals for less than £1 a portion.
To get you started, the group delivers free ingredients for seven meals, the equipment you need and a local shopping guide.
You are then supported step-by-step over WhatsApp or on the phone.
The course runs in selected locations around the country, including London and Birmingham.
Find out more and apply at bagsoftaste.org.
LOCAL HEROES: Many councils put on free cooking classes to help residents cut down on food waste and learn how to make healthy homemade meals.
For example, Bexley Council is currently offering a free five-week Cookery Club for residents.
Check in with your local authority to see what is on offer.
You can also find local events through listings site Eventbrite.
Just select your location and search “cooking class”. You also have the option to search for free events only.
FREE RECIPES: The Body Coach Joe Wickes has published several cooking books, but he also offers fans a load of free recipes through his website.
Head to thebodycoach.com/resources to sign up for his free budget recipes ebook, which features easy meals you can batch cook.
There’s also a pack of simple soup recipes and 15 winter warmer ones.
BEST IN CLASS: The Jamie Oliver cookery school runs in-person classes, which typically cost between £60 and £100 a session.
If you opt for an online session, the price drops to £30.
And you can also get £10 off when you sign up to the school’s mailing list, taking the cost to £20.
- All prices on page correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.
