Four people’s lives were unfortunately brought to an end on Sunday in a head-on collision between two sedans on the R38 road between Hendrina and Carolina in Mpumalanga.
This accident follows several warnings for motorists to adhere to the road rules during the adverse weather conditions that meteorologists had warned about.
The victims include two passengers and one driver in one vehicle, and the driver in the other vehicle, who was the sole occupant at the time of the crash.
“There were no other injuries in the incident, and all victims died at the scene. The investigation into the crash has already commenced,” said the Community Safety spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Moeti Mmusi.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie, has called on motorists to exercise extreme caution on the road to avoid deadly crashes, especially during rainy weather.
He adds that the current conditions affect visibility and drivability of vehicles.
“We are therefore calling for heightened vigilance and stricter adherence to the rules in order to avoid devastating crashes. Motorists must operate their vehicles in line with prevailing conditions on the road. They must reduce speed and increase following distances,” said Macie.
This is one of the horrific car accidents reported this weekend alone, with one killing five family members in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday and another killing 10 people in the Free State on Saturday.
