After months of speculation, SWD Rugby has confirmed that former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer will take over as head coach of the SWD Eagles, marking a long-awaited return to where his professional coaching career began nearly three decades ago.
For Meyer, widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most accomplished rugby tacticians, the appointment represents a homecoming to Outeniqua Park, where he first coached the Eagles in the late 1990s before rising to national and international prominence.

Meyer went on to enjoy a highly successful coaching career – guiding the Bulls to Super Rugby triumph, and later taking charge of Leicester Tigers in England and Stade Français in France.
His tenure as Springbok coach from 2012 to 2015 included a Rugby World Cup semi-final appearance and a reputation for building disciplined, competitive teams.
‘Vision and passion’
“We are thrilled to welcome Heyneke Meyer back to the SWD Eagles,” said Ben Brinkhuis, President of SWD Rugby.
“His experience, vision and passion for developing South African rugby talent make him the ideal leader to guide our team into a new era.”
Meyer’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Eagles, who are seeking to rebuild after a challenging 2025 season.
His proven ability to transform teams and nurture young players is expected to bring renewed energy, structure, and belief to the George-based side.
Meyer will officially begin his duties later this month as preparations get underway for the 2026 season.
