Former Gauteng Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health, Brian Hlongwa, has died.
According to the Gauteng Provincial Government, Hlongwa passed away on Tuesday, 22 December 2025, after a short illness.
In a statement on Wednesday, 24 December, Acting Premier Jacob Mamabolo said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of former MEC Hlongwa. He served the people of Gauteng with distinction, through different portfolios from his days in the City of Johannesburg to serving as an MEC. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time of great loss.”
Hlongwa served as Health MEC from March 2006 to May 2009.
He was also a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and served as the party’s Chief Whip in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature until October 2018, when he resigned amid allegations of corruption.
EWN reports that Hlongwa was accused of corruption amounting to approximately R1.2 billion in the Gauteng Department of Health during his tenure.
His case was scheduled to go on trial at the Gauteng High Court in April.
IOL reports that Hlongwa faced several criminal charges, including corruption, fraud, and money laundering, linked to alleged irregular contracts and payments within the Gauteng Department of Health.
The ANC in Gauteng said Hlongwa will be remembered as a patriot, educator, and dedicated servant of the people.
