  • Gauteng’s Human Settlements Department warns RDP/BNG homeowners to inspect roofs and gutters immediately as the summer rainy season begins.
  • The alert stresses that early maintenance prevents costly leaks, structural damage, mould, and electrical faults from increasingly severe storms.
  • Residents are urged to clean drainage, reseal cracks, and repair roof tiles to avoid high repair costs and ensure home safety.

The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements has issued an early warning as the province moves into its summer rainy season, urging homeowners – particularly recipients of RDP and BNG subsidised housing – to undertake essential home maintenance to prevent flood damage.

Citing increasing storm intensity, the department is appealing to residents to immediately inspect and maintain roofs, gutters, and walls.

Officials report that each year, numerous leaks, damp walls, and even structural damage are reported, often due to neglected roofing materials and blocked drainage.

Department spokesperson, alongside MEC Tasneem Motara, stressed the need for prompt action. If left unattended, dampness and leaks can lead to costly issues, including mould, electrical faults, and ceiling collapse.

Homeowners are advised to:

  • Repair or replace loose and damaged roof tiles.
  • Clean out gutters, downpipes, and stormwater channels.
  • Reseal roof joints, vent pipes, and wall cracks using quality waterproof materials.
  • Prune trees to remove any branches that could cause storm damage.

The department emphasised that early prevention is the best way to avoid expensive repairs and inconvenience later in the season.
