Five of the best sunset spots in and around Cape Town

Catching the sunset in Cape Town is part and parcel of experiencing the Mother City’s beauty. No shade thrown at sunrises, though!

You shouldn’t travel, or even live, there without taking a few minutes basking in one of these serene moments.

Below are five well-known spots you can visit to get a good glimpse as the sun melts into the horizon.

Signal Hill

Signal Hill is one of the most famous spots in Cape Town to experience the sunset. If you haven’t been up there yet, it’s a flat hill right next to Lion’s Head. It’s also known for resembling a lion’s rump. While we’re here for the sunsets, it’s also the spot where you can find the famous Noon Guns, or rather, hear them! You can also enjoy other activities here such as paragliding, picnicking, trail running, among others.

Sunset Rock

Sunset Rock is well-known for being a hidden gem, but it’s nonetheless loved by many. It’s at the end of Ocean View Drive in the Fresnaye suburb. After parking at the dead end once you reach the end of Ocean View Drive, directions include a bit of walking along an unmarked pathway, bushes, and rocks. You will then discover a distinct flat boulder where you can chill and enjoy magnificent views of Clifton and Camps Bay, but most importantly, a front-row seat to the sunset.

Seapoint Promenade

The beloved Seapoint Promenade won’t disappoint, and it’s easily accessible. Catch a glimpse of the sun setting while taking a slow walk along the promenade or chase it down as it disappears while on your afternoon run or cycle. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy the ocean breeze and be around the Cape Town community.

Llandudno Beach

Llandudno Beach is approximately 18 kilometres from the city and is highly praised. It’s known as being more secluded. Additionally, it’s also a Blue Flag beach, which means it adheres to high standards and criteria for safety, environmental management, and water quality. The boulders are often sought after ‘seats’ to soak in the last rays of sunlight. If you enjoy taking photos, this will also make for a few majestic backdrops!

Camps Bay Beach

Camps Bay Beach is another recommended spot. Approximately 20 minutes from Cape Town city, it’s an easy start to your sunset if you’re a first-timer exploring the area. There are a variety of restaurants and bars in Camps Bay where you can have a bite to eat or sip on a few sundowners. It has also held Blue Flag status for numerous years. With the view of the Twelve Apostles and the welcoming beach, you are sure to get some of the best sunsets here.

While these are only five popular sunset spot suggestions, you won’t have to look too far for more in Cape Town. There are tons! You can make a day of it or take an after work breather before the streetlights take over the show.
