Ah, there’s nothing like a summer braai. Whether it’s mouthwatering steaks, lekker lamb chops or classic boerie rolls, cooking on the grill in sultry weather just hits different.
And you know what would amp up the experience even more? Braaing on the beach, of course!
In Cape Town, there are several beaches – complete with salty breezes and sun-baked sand – where you can sizzle up a succulent, barbecued feast.
THESE FIVE BEACH SPOTS ARE PERFECT FOR BRAAING
If you’re ready to braai by the beachside, grab your grid, tongs and charcoal, and head down to the following hotspots:
1. BUFFELS BAY BEACH
Buffels Bay Beach is a coastal gem. Located in the Cape Point Nature Reserve, it boasts spectacular views of the ocean, a diverse ecosystem and tidal pools. As a bonus, the beach features built-in braai facilities.
2. MAIDEN’S COVE

Located between Clifton’s Beaches and Glen Beach, Maiden’s Cove in Camps Bay features a popular braai area, one that’s available on a first-come, first-served basis.
While the meat is cooking away, you can gaze upon the blue-green waters of the Atlantic Ocean, admire the majesty of Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles, or simply kick your feet up as you watch the setting sun dip into the seawater.
3. OUDEKRAAL BEACH
Another fixture on the Atlantic Ocean – about 15 minutes away from Clifton – Oudekraal Beach is a braai lover’s paradise. There are 35 braai spots, many of which can be snatched up very quickly. Be sure to bring your own grid, tongs, charcoal and wood.
Oudekraal is also a prime location for swimming, sunbathing and snorkelling!
4. SOETWATER BEACH

Down the road in Kommetjie, Soetwater Beach is ideal for the entire family. From tidal pool swimming to fishing, you and the little ones can enjoy this pristine stretch of coast. Expect plenty of braai pits and picnic areas for your cooking needs.
5. STRANDFONTEIN BEACH
Another family-favourite location, Strandfontein Beach along False Bay in Mitchells Plain offers plenty of braai areas. There, you and your loved ones – along with your friends – can barbecue in style by the seaside.
There’s also a massive tidal pool to swim in, jungle gyms for the kids to play on, and ample opportunity for fishing and beachcombing.
IT’S A MOTHER CITY BEACH ‘N BRAAI
So, folks, if you’re celebrating summer, looking for a Christmas lunch venue alternative or you just want to spend some quality time with your family during the holidays, these beaches in Cape Town have got you covered for a whole season of outdoor braaing.
Of course, not every beach is the same. Some will offer grids, while others will not. When it comes to charcoal, firelights and cooking utensils – along with food and drinks – it’s best to bring your own rather than to err on the side of caution.
Don’t forget to monitor the weather conditions (summer rain – you can never predict them), and always leave the beach spot clean and tidy afterwards.
Happy braaing!
