Bafana Bafana have struggled during their group stage matches in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite conceding four goals in three matches, they surprisingly managed to earn six points. In their last AFCON, Bafana reached the semi-finals, allowing just three goals, two of which came from Mali. However, in this edition, they have conceded goals in every match and appear far from convincing.
Having finished second in Group B, Bafana will now face the runner-up from Group F, which could be Ivory Coast, Cameroon, or Mozambique.
Here are five areas Bafana need to work on in this AFCON:
Find balance in defence
It seems that Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s partnership with Siyabonga Ngezana is not effective. Their pairing has lacked stability, which could lead to an early elimination if it continues.
Some fans have called for coach Hugo Broos to pair Mbokazi with Nkosinathi Sibisi, as they played together at Orlando Pirates and could bring more stability to the backline.
Aubaas should play with Mokoena
Siphephelo Sithole has looked lost during this tournament, appearing to be a shadow of his former self compared to his performance in the 2023 AFCON.
His combination with Teboho Mokoena has not worked effectively, as evidenced by the improvement when Bathusi Aubaas replaced him, helping Bafana click during the match against Zimbabwe.
Fix the Number 10 role
Sipho Mbule has not made a significant impact in the tournament. In the three matches played, “The Masterchef” has not displayed the magic he showed during the World Cup qualifiers.
A better option might be for Broos to play Relebohile Mofokeng in the number 10 position for the next game. With Oswin Appollis and Moremi on the wings, this could give Bafana a better chance.
Replace Modiba with Kabini
Aubrey Modiba had a disappointing performance, with his passes often frustrating Ronwen Williams during the 3-2 win over Zimbabwe on Monday. Samukele Kabini could be a better option at left-back, especially as Bafana will be facing tall and strong players
Consider Shandre Campbell
Bafana have become predictable in this AFCON. It may be time for Broos to inject some creativity into the lineup.
If Mofokeng, Appollis, Moremi, and Lyle Foster all start in the round of 16, one of the wingers could be substituted for Campbell. The 20-year-old winger might be the surprise package, as both Mohau Nkota and Elias Mokwana have not made an impact from the bench so far.
