Five accused in Bekkersdal tavern shooting back in court

The five people accused of fatally shooting nine patrons at the KwaNoxolo tavern in Bekkersdal, Gauteng, are expected to return to the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

A 10th person later died in hospital.

According to the SABC, the accused appeared in court on Monday, but have not yet applied for legal aid.

They face multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and live ammunition, as well as contravening the Immigration Act.

Court proceedings revealed that one of the accused has a previous conviction for attempted murder, adding to the seriousness of the case.

Tavern owner

Meanwhile, the matter involving the tavern owner, Nanesi Matwa, has been postponed to Wednesday.

Matwa is facing a separate charge of operating the tavern with a fraudulent liquor licence.

The fatal shooting at the Bekkersdal tavern has shocked the local community, with the case continuing as investigations progress.
