‘Finally a ref with eyes’: Springbok fans applaud Carley in win over Ireland

Springbok fans praised referee Matthew Carley after the team’s 24-13 victory over Ireland in the Nations Series Test on Saturday evening.

The English referee issued three yellow cards to the ill-disciplined Irish side, which at one point was reduced to 12 men in the first half.

The Springboks led 19-7 at halftime after a dominant performance, but the home side made a strong comeback in the second half, adding only six points to their score.

Fans commended Carley for his fairness compared to previous referees who officiated during the team’s European tour.

Former Springboks coach Nick Mallett also lauded Carley for his bravery.

“I just have a quick mention on the referee, He was the guy who ref us against the All Blacks prior to the World Cup, and he’s given four yellow cards against Ireland for consistent infringements,” he said on SuperSport TV.

“I take my hat off to this guy, he is very brave away from home and he is been outstanding as a referee today.”

Springbok fans happy with Carley’s display

“Minnows Ireland tried to cheat their way to victory against Springboks but got found out for their dirty tricks… Finally a ref with eyes. And the cherry on top Ireland can’t scrum even Georgia is better than them,” @Lord_Stirus tweeted.

“Matthew Carley was having a great game given the circumstances. but he lost me when he gave a penalty to Libbok for celebrating. Where is that in the Law book?” @RuggaRugby tweeted.

Irish fans however, felt that Carley ruined the game by not issuing a yellow card to a Springbok player in the opening minutes of the match.

The Boks are in action again this coming weekend against Wales as they look to end the year on a high.

Do you think Carley was fair on Saturday?
