Exeter secures sixth place among the UK’s most haunted cities

In honour of spooky season, Exeter has been ranked sixth among UK cities most likely to be living with a ghost. Known for its underground passageways, ancient cathedral, and countless ghost stories, the ranking comes as no surprise.

The study, conducted by Alan Biswell Group, looked at 39 different UK cities. It collected data such as the number of paranormal reports, cemeteries, memorials, vacant properties, and houses built before 1919.

Exeter was awarded a final score of 7.4 out of 10 – just behind York in third place, Bradford in second, and Aberdeen in first with a score of 8.25.

However, the city reported more paranormal sightings than any of the cities in the top five, with a chilling 62 reports. In comparison, Bradford reported just 24.

Some of the other haunting statistics from Exeter include: 656 vacant properties, 13,550 properties built before 1919, 14 cemeteries, and 9,355 memorials.

Exeter’s reputation as a haunted city has historical roots dating back to the 17th century, and it continues to be upheld today.

In 2022, Exeter Uni was reported to be one of the top five most haunted universities in the UK.

It might be best not to walk around Exeter, whether it’s the city or the uni, at night – unless you’re looking to get spooked by a ghost.
