Eskom has confirmed a scheduled power outage that will affect several communities in the Mabopane and Klipgat area on Sunday, 18 January. The utility says it will carry out essential maintenance on its distribution network to ensure the continued reliability and safety of the electricity supply.
According to Eskom, the planned power outage will begin at 10:00 and end at 16:00. Areas affected include Block U (Extensions and Prison), Ikageng, Klipgat, Klipgat C, and Odinburg. Eskom said the interruption is unavoidable due to the nature of the work required on the power lines.
The power utility stated that the maintenance forms part of routine efforts to improve network performance and reduce the risk of unplanned outages in the future.
Eskom outlines reasons for the power outage
Eskom explained that the power outage is necessary to allow technicians safe access to the distribution infrastructure.
“The interruption in electricity supply is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,” the utility said.
Maintenance work of this nature often requires switching off electricity to protect workers and prevent damage to equipment. Eskom noted that while such interruptions can be inconvenient, they remain critical for maintaining a stable electricity supply over the long term.
Safety warning and apology to customers
Eskom has urged residents and businesses in the affected areas to take safety precautions during the outage period.
“In the interest of safety, customers are advised not to treat all electrical appliances as live at all times during the power supply outage,” Eskom said.
Customers are encouraged to unplug sensitive appliances to prevent possible damage when electricity is restored. Eskom also cautioned that electricity supply may be restored earlier or later than planned and advised residents to remain cautious throughout the day.
The utility expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the planned maintenance.
“Eskom would like to thank you for your cooperation and apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by this maintenance,” it said.
Eskom also noted that unforeseen circumstances could affect the power outage schedule.
“Should circumstances beyond the control of Eskom arise, the planned electricity maintenance may not proceed as communicated,” the utility warned.
