- NEHAWU is calling on the ANC to stop staggering payments and immediately settle all outstanding staff salaries.
- Workers say the delays have left them unable to pay home loans, car installments, and school fees.
- This is the fourth time this year the ANC has reportedly failed to meet its payroll obligations.
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) has called on the ANC to stop staggering salary payments for staff at Luthuli House and immediately pay all outstanding salaries.
The union led a salary demonstration outside the Birchwood Conference Centre in Boksburg on Monday to demand that the ANC leadership pay their workers.
The demonstration occurs as the ANC holds its 5th National General Council (NGC) in the City of Ekurhuleni.
Speaking to Kaya News outside the Birchwood hotel, the union said the delay in salaries has created significant hardship for workers, as many have been struggling to pay their home loans and vehicle installments.
Schools are also allegedly refusing to release reports of the affected staff’s children due to outstanding monthly installments.
Secretary of NEHAWU at the Walter Sisulu and Luthuli House branch, Nombuso Mthembu, says they are not fighting the ANC, but the situation of desperate workers has pushed the union to defend them.
“We have members who have chronic illnesses and need to get medication from time to time. It is also so sad that when you get to the doctor, medical is not paid, which means you need to pay from your own pocket, so how are our members expected to keep up with that when they have not been paid yet,” she said.
The non-payment of salaries has raised questions about whether the liberation movement has enough money to finance the 1 600 delegates attending the NGC in Boksburg.
This is reportedly the fourth time this year that the ANC has failed to meet its payroll obligations to employees at its Pixley Seme Street head office in Johannesburg.
The ANC said the Union is within its right to protest over what it says is the ANC’s failure to pay its staff.
