- 173 vehicles including cars, motorcycles, burnt vehicles, trailers and caravans, remain uncollected at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) pound.
- Vehicle owners have until Tuesday, 27 January 2026, to claim their impounded property by presenting proof of ownership and paying storage and towing fees.
- Unclaimed vehicles face auction under National Road Traffic Act 1996, Regulation 320, once 120 days pass without collection or payment.
The City of Ekurhuleni has issued a public notice calling on all owners of cars currently at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) pound to collect their vehicles by Tuesday, 27 January 2026.
According to the City, the cars were impounded by EMPD officers across the city for various offences and remain uncollected despite their efforts to contact the owners.
The list of impounded vehicles totals 173 and includes cars, motorcycles, burnt vehicles, trailers, and caravans.
In a statement released on Tuesday, 8 December 2025, the City stated that to claim the vehicles, owners or authorised collectors must provide proof of ownership, including vehicle registration documents, an identification card for the owner or collector, and valid photo identification.
The owner or collector must also pay the outstanding impoundment, towing, storage, and administrative costs.
“If a vehicle remains uncollected and the costs remain unpaid, the city will proceed to dispose of it to recover costs incurred.
“This is in line with the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2000. In terms of the National Road Traffic Act 1996 (Act 93 of 1996), Regulation 320 which provides that when a vehicle is impounded, and the owner has been traced but fails to collect the vehicle for more than 120 days, it may be sold to defray any costs incurred by the municipality,” the statement reads.
