The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster Management Emergency Services has confirmed it remains on high alert after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued warnings for severe thunderstorms across Gauteng and large parts of the country.
A Yellow Level 2 warning is currently in place for southern Gauteng, along with parts of the North West and Northern Cape. More severe weather, a Level 4 warning, has been issued for the central and eastern Free State.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi issued a stern warning, stressing the potential dangers to residents.
“Those who stay in wetland areas should be on high alert as flooding is imminent,” Ntladi stated.
He also cautioned residents about the strong winds expected to accompany the storms.
“Again, due to the strong winds that are blowing, those who reside next to huge trees [should be cautious], as that can be blown off,” he added.
Ntladi warned that the worst-case scenario could result in fatalities and significant property loss.
Emergency services are fully prepared to respond to any eventualities arising from the severe weather conditions.
