Eastern Cape on high alert as severe storms intensify

The Eastern Cape is expected to face the most significant weather impact today, with widespread showers and severe thunderstorms expected across the province.

Furthermore, Forecaster Phemelo Zonke said the province lies directly under a band of intense weather activity.

“Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers will be widespread over the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape,” he said.

Yellow 4 severe thunderstorms in the Eastern Cape

The South African Weather Service has upgraded the warning to a yellow level 4 for severe thunderstorms in the Eastern Cape, extending into neighbouring provinces. Additionally, these storms may bring heavy rainfall, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning, increasing the risk of localised flooding.

“That warning stretches all the way through the Free State, North West and the southern parts of Limpopo,” Zonke added.

Cloudy conditions

Today, cloudy conditions persist, with showers and thunderstorms expected across much of the province. Furthermore, East London is set to reach a maximum of around 25°C, with cooler conditions along the coast due to persistent cloud cover and rain.

Additionally, Zonke warned residents about potential travel disruptions.

“Severe thunderstorms may result in heavy downpours of rain and strong damaging winds,” he said.

Authorities urge communities in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, avoid crossing swollen rivers and stay updated on weather alerts.
