Durban is set to gain a new international air link, with direct flights to an Indian Ocean island scheduled to launch early next year.
Global Airways has announced plans to operate direct flights between Durban and d in partnership with Fly Vetiv’Air.
The announcement was made at a pre-launch event held at Dube TradePort on 11 December.
Durban to Réunion
Speaking on behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, head of department Dr Nkosenye Zulu said the new air link is expected to increase tourist arrivals and open new export opportunities.
He said the cargo facilities at King Shaka International Airport would also play a key role in supporting exporters.
“We are confident that this route will stimulate two-way tourism, strengthen trade, and support investment across sectors ranging from agriculture and manufacturing to green energy and the creative industries,” Zulu said, according to The Citizen.
A boost for eThekwini’s global profile
eThekwini Deputy Mayor and deputy chairperson of the city’s Economic Development Cluster, Councillor Philisiwe Ndlovu, described the pre-launch as a major step for Durban’s aviation and tourism sectors.
She said the new service would make business and leisure travel easier while strengthening Durban’s position as a sustainable and resilient gateway into Africa.
Dube TradePort CEO and Durban Direct co-chair Hamish Erskine said the new Réunion route, together with the possible return of direct Durban–Mauritius flights, marked an important moment for the province.
“The prospect of a new Réunion route and the long-anticipated revival of direct Durban–Mauritius flights marks a truly exciting development for the province,” Erskine said.
The service will operate from King Shaka International Airport, with the first Durban-Réunion flight expected to take off on 26 February 2026.
