Durban Botanic Gardens to light up for festive season

The Durban Botanic Gardens is set to become alight with the holiday spirit.

To ring in the Christmas holidays, the 2025 edition of Trail of Lights will turn Durbz’ popular botanical gardens into a dazzling display of festive sparkle and cheer.

Ready to be swept away by holiday magic? Here’s everything you need to know:

DURBAN BOTANIC GARDENS: TRAIL OF LIGHTS INFO

The Trail of Lights will take place at the gardens’ premises in 9A John Zikhali Road, Berea. Parking is available at the uMphafa field and the Visitors Complex entrance at R40 per vehicle.

The event will run between 18:00 and 22:00 on the following dates:

  • 5–7 December 2025
  • 10–24 December 2025
  • 26–30 December 2025
  • 1–3 January 2026

Tickets purchased online at www.webtickets.co.za start from R85 per person, or R120 at the door (card payments only). Children aged two and under can enter for free.

Please note that it gets pretty busy at the Trail of Lights. As such, your time slot is the earliest time you may enter the event. Once you are inside, you may stay until closing time.

Should you arrive after your time slot, you will still be allowed in. However, entry before your slot is not permitted.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Numerous installations showcasing festive scenes – such as Christmas presents, trees and reindeer – will light up the botanic gardens in all their glittering splendour. They’re perfect as backdrops for photos or simply inspire wonder and delight in your inner child.

For the kids, they can visit Santa Claus and his troupe of elves at Santa’s Grotto. They can also visit the workshop, where they can get their craft on by creating little keepsakes.

Plus, you and the family can enjoy gourmet fare at the two food gardens and take in the live entertainment.

PAWS FOR THOUGHT AT THE DURBAN BOTANIC GARDENS

Hey, your furry friends deserve to feel the festive vibes, too!

For one night only, on 10 December 2025, you can bring your dogs to the Trail of Lights. Be sure to keep them on a leash where possible for a fun, safe and memorable experience.

Tickets cost R60 per pup. The organisers will donate the proceeds from these ticket to Feeding the Furballs, a local rescue animal organisation.

Registered service dogs are allowed on all nights. You must provide the required documentation.
