‘Drug addiction’ ends Sean Williams’ Zimbabwe cricket career

Former Zimbabwe cricket captain Sean Williams has officially ended his international career after entering a rehabilitation programme for drug addiction, Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed.

The cricket board said Williams, 39, made himself unavailable for national selection and would not be picked again in the future.

Sean Williams’ decorated career comes to a close

Over his career, the veteran all-rounder scored nearly 9 000 runs and claimed more than 150 wickets across all formats. He became one of Zimbabwe’s most accomplished players.

Williams withdrew from the national T20 squad before the World Cup Africa Qualifier series in Harare in September.

ZC said that during an internal investigation into his withdrawal, he disclosed that he had been struggling with drug addiction. The board added that he had voluntarily entered rehabilitation.

‘Sean Williams no longer considered’

“After careful consideration, ZC has concluded that Williams will no longer be considered for national selection,” the governing body added.

Williams has not yet responded to Zimbabwe Cricket’s statement.

The board emphasised its expectations regarding player conduct.

“ZC expects all contracted players to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and compliance with team protocols and anti-doping regulations.”

ZC praises his contribution and wishes him well

It also revealed that “a review of Williams’ record indicates a history of disciplinary issues and repeated unavailability, which has impacted team preparations and performance.

“While ZC commends him for seeking rehabilitation, withdrawal from team commitments under circumstances involving potential testing raises serious concerns regarding professional and ethical standards.”

Zimbabwe Cricket said it was “not feasible” to continue Williams’ national contract when it expires on 31 December.

“Notwithstanding this, ZC sincerely acknowledges and appreciates his immense contribution to Zimbabwean cricket over the past two decades,” the board said.

“Williams has played a pivotal role in some of the most significant moments in our recent history, leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the field.

“ZC wishes him strength in his recovery and every success in his future endeavours.”
