DNC bus company mourns 42 passengers killed in Limpopo crash

The DNC bus company has extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the 42 passengers who died when one of its buses crashed near Makhado (formerly Louis Trichardt) in Limpopo on Sunday.

DNC Coaches manager Dennis Jakopo in Gqeberha described the tragedy as a “national disaster” and said the loss devastated the company.

“It is so sad for such an event, and it’s a national disaster. We were not expecting it, you know. There were children and magogos (old women),” he told Newzroom Afrika.

Limpopo Crash Leaves Dozens Dead and Injured

Jakopo said the bus left the Gqeberha rank on Saturday around 3 pm for a 2 100-kilometre journey to Harare.

Malawian passengers were scheduled to transfer to another DNC bus in Harare.

“It’s so sad to receive such news. We are sorry to all the families who lost their relatives. We are very sorry,” he added.

The passengers, mostly Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals, were travelling home from Gqeberha when the bus veered off a mountainous section of the N1 and plunged down an embankment.

42 killed, several injured in bus crash

Authorities confirmed that the crash killed 42 people and injured several others who were rushed to nearby hospitals.

The bus was carrying two drivers and one host at the time of the accident.

Jakopo said company representatives left Gqeberha on Monday morning to visit the crash site and assist in identifying victims.

“In an hour or two they will be there with enough information, and we are also trying to get in touch with the next of kin,” he said.

President Ramaphosa Sends Condolences

President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his deep condolences to the governments and citizens of Zimbabwe and Malawi following the tragedy.

In a statement, Ramaphosa said the accident was especially painful as it occurred during Transport Month, when the country focuses on road safety.

“This incident is a tragedy for South Africa and our sister states of Zimbabwe and Malawi alike,” he said.

He urged all road users, transport operators, and drivers to prioritise safety.

“Our roads are economic networks that connect our region. We must do everything we can to ensure that we stay safe and share our roads responsibly and with care for one another,” Ramaphosa said.
