- DJ Warras was fatally shot while allegedly inspecting a hijacked building he co-owned, in what authorities believe may be linked to the property.
- Gauteng police have video footage of the suspects, one described as having dreadlocks, and are actively tracking them.
- Stock’s death, at age 40, comes weeks after another private security figure, Marius Van Der Merwe, was also killed, raising concerns about safety in the sector.
South African media personality Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was reportedly killed by three suspects while allegedly inspecting a hijacked building in Johannesburg CBD.
Besides his career in media and entertainment, Stock was also reportedly involved in the private security sector, and he was reportedly the co-owner of the Zambezi building, just outside Carlton Centre.
According to media reports, the three assailants shot him and fled the scene immediately by foot.
Gauteng police say the building he was inspecting had both authorised and unauthorised occupants. They confirmed that one of the suspects who shot him is an African male with dreadlocks.
This brutal killing has sent shockwaves across the country, raising questions about the safety of private security companies and highlighting the dangers of hijacked buildings in the inner city of Johannesburg.
The motive behind his death is not yet known, and the matter remains under police investigation. Police said they have video footage and are tracking the suspects’ movements.
Gauteng police acting commissioner Frans Kekana said Stock’s death may be related to the building he was inspecting.
“It was not a drive-by shooting; the suspects were seated. Warras was shot immediately when he came out of the building. We hope it is not related to this, but this is a clear indicator that his death is connected to this building, which has some people who are not supposed to be here.
He’s reportedly the co-owner of the building,” Kekana said.
Stock was 40 when he died and leaves behind three children.
His death comes just weeks after the tragic killing of Marius Van Der Merwe, who’s also in the private security business.
Van Der Merwe, who testified before the Madlanga Commission as Witness D, was fatally shot in full view of his family at his Brakpan home, east of Johannesburg.
Witness D was one of the suspects who implicated Ekurhuleni Metro Police officers in corruption and a covered-up murder case.
