A tragic bus crash in Limpopo has claimed at least 42 lives and left several others critically injured, with the death toll expected to rise.
The accident occurred on the N1 north near Louis Trichardt, in a steep mountainous section of the road, when a bus travelling from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape to Harare, Zimbabwe, veered off the road and plunged down an embankment.
Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba is expected to visit the crash site at 11:00 to meet with the multidisciplinary response team and brief the media on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy. Losing so many lives in one incident is painful beyond words. On behalf of the Limpopo Provincial Government, we extend our deepest condolences to the affected families, including those in Zimbabwe and Malawi. We wish a full and speedy recovery to all survivors. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” said Premier Ramathuba.
Preliminary reports suggest that the bus was transporting passengers from Zimbabwe and Malawi who were travelling from the Eastern Cape to their home countries when it veered off the road along a steep mountain pass and plunged down an embankment.
Emergency services, including paramedics, traffic officials, and law enforcement, responded swiftly and worked late into the night to rescue survivors and recover bodies. Several of the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Investigations by the South African Police Service and provincial traffic authorities are underway to determine the cause of the accident.
