Deputy principal shot outside Daveyton school

A deputy principal at Dinoto Technical Secondary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, is recovering in hospital after being shot outside the school on Friday morning.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said unknown suspects attacked the teacher while he entered the school premises.

“He sustained injuries and received immediate medical attention at a nearby hospital,” Mabona said in a statement.

POLICE INVESTIGATION AND SUPPORT FOR STAFF AND LEARNERS

The department deployed support teams to counsel teachers, learners, and staff affected by the incident.

Mabona said the shooting did not disrupt the ongoing National Senior Certificate exams.

“Despite this unfortunate event, the school has continued with the ongoing NSC examinations under close monitoring to ensure minimal disruption and to maintain a safe environment for all learners,” Mabona said.

Education MEC Matome Chiloane condemned the attack, calling it a “senseless act of violence.”

He said schools must remain safe for both learners and educators.

“We are deeply shocked by this incident. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for both learners and educators. The Department condemns this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible terms.

We wish the Deputy Principal a full and speedy recovery, and we urge law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice,” said Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane.

Police are investigating the shooting. No arrests have been made.
