  • The Makhanda High Court has denied bail to 52-year-old deputy principal Vuyokazi Gana, following her arrest for allegedly operating a human trafficking and prostitution syndicate.
  • Investigations suggest Gana recruited young women from the former Transkei to East London, where they were coerced into sex work while she profited from daily accommodation fees.
  • Gana remains in custody and is scheduled to return to court on 3 March 2026, as the Hawks continue their probe into the exploitation ring.

A 52-year-old deputy school principal accused of running a human trafficking and prostitution ring has been denied bail by the Makhanda High Court. The ruling follows an unsuccessful appeal by Vuyokazi Gana to overturn a previous decision by the East London Magistrate’s Court.

Gana was arrested in October 2025 by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit.

The arrest concluded a two-year investigation into allegations that she recruited young women from the former Transkei region specifically Qumbu, Mthatha, and Ngqeleni under false pretences.

The Hawks allege that Gana transported victims to East London, where they were housed at her properties and coerced into sex work. According to investigators, the deputy principal profited directly from these activities by charging the women “accommodation fees” of between (R250 to R300) per night.

Further evidence suggests that Gana either personally collected the proceeds from these sexual encounters or directed the victims to deposit the money into her accounts.

Prosecutors successfully argued against Gana’s release, citing the gravity of the charges and the risk to the ongoing investigation. The Makhanda High Court upheld this position, ensuring she remains in custody until her next appearance.

The case has been adjourned until 3 March 2026 to allow for further investigation.
