DA lays criminal case against ex Gauteng health official- here’s why

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has opened a criminal case against Lerato Madyo, the former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at the provincial department of health.

The charges relate to her alleged role in the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal.

Shadow health minister Jack Bloom said the party wants to hold Madyo accountable for failing to act on fraudulent transactions flagged at the hospital.

MADYO WAS A ‘CHIEF SUSPECT’

In a statement on Wednesday, Bloom said the charges include contraventions of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA) and the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

The case was opened at the Johannesburg Central Police Station.

Madyo resigned from her position in August last year, shortly before a disciplinary finding was to be made.

She had been suspended since 2022 over 13 misconduct charges linked to suspicious contracts worth R850 million, which murdered whistleblower Babita Deokaran had tried to stop.

Bloom said Madyo was a “chief suspect” who had been allowed to dodge accountability.

“Scandalously, they allowed her to resign shortly before a finding was made, so she walked off with her pension and R3 million paid to her while suspended,” he added.

SIU REPORT EXPOSES R2 BILLION THEFT

A recent SIU report exposed criminal syndicates that siphoned R2 billion from Tembisa Hospital.

It implicated senior officials, which Bloom said the party sought to hold accountable.

“We will not rest until all those implicated in the theft of more than R2 billion from Tembisa Hospital are charged and convicted in court,” he said.

“This includes the kingpins of the various syndicates who looted public money with fake companies, and most important of all, the mastermind who ordered Babita’s murder.”
