Our local hero Sam Fender took home the 2025 Mercury Prize, appropriate, for the award shows first time outside London.
The show ran through all the artists and albums that were shortlisted, with nine out of the 12 artists performing.
Sam was up against strong competition, the most notable probably being PULP, Wolf Alice and Fontaines DC. Other competitors included CMAT, Martin Carthy, Pa Salieu, Emma-Jean Thackray, Jacob Alon, FKA twigs, Pink Pantheress, and Joe Webb.
As the night went on, Anticipation grew as each nominees performed, with Fender last in the setlist.
At the end of the night, Radio 1’s Sean Eliri, came to the stage to announce Sam’s win. Suddenly the arena erupted with Geordie pride. Fans stood to their feet, and Sam joined in with the toon chants that grew from the crowd.
Sam was understandably tongue-tied, but expressed great gratitude to all who helped with the album.
As the stage was prepared for his winning performance, Eliri commented how it was the singers ability to convey “people and community” that won him the prize against the “strong shortlist”.
The Mercury Prize is the most prestigious award in British music. Sam’s win in itself showcases the incredible creative talent the northeast has to offer. However, to host the event in Newcastle, and for him to win it in his home city, adds that black and white cherry on top. The night put a spotlight on the North East as an important musical region, and a significant part of the wider Music industry.
