The Council for Geoscience invites South African unemployed graduates to apply for the SHEQ Internship Programme 2026. This is a 24-month fixed-term internship designed to provide hands-on workplace exposure in Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) within a national science council environment.

Internship Overview
- Job Title: SHEQ Intern (x8)
- Contract Duration: Fixed Term – 24 Months
- Stipend: R13 000 per month
- Reporting Line: Manager: Safety, Health, Environment & Quality
Overall Purpose:
To support CGS in complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act), its Regulations, and other relevant legal requirements, while developing practical SHEQ competencies under mentorship.
Key Responsibilities
While learning under the guidance of CGS SHEQ professionals, interns will:
- Assist with implementing Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) workplace plans
- Support OHSE administration and record-keeping
- Participate in workplace audits and compliance monitoring
- Monitor correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Assist with occupational hygiene and safety risk assessments
- Support implementation of risk and hazard prevention measures
- Promote internal and external stakeholder relations
- Attend relevant workshops and training
- Provide SHEQ-related administrative and ad hoc support
Behavioural Attributes & Skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and a can-do attitude
- Willingness to learn and develop professionally
- Computer literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Business-level English proficiency
Minimum Educational Requirements
- Grade 12, and
- National Diploma (NQF Level 6) (preferably in Occupational Health and Safety)
- A Degree will be an added advantage
