Each year the cost of a monthly gym contract increases, here’s a look at the rates of a current gym contract.
COST OF GYM MEMBERSHIPS IN SOUTH AFRICA
VIRGIN ACTIVE
One of the most popular gyms in South Africa is Virgin Active, with over 130 clubs across the country. Virgin Active has various different options for their gym contracts.
- Virgin Active contracts can start from around R600 depending on the location of the gym. Club rates for single clubs differ depending on location, you can take a look here.
- There is also an option for an off-peak membership to use the club at only certain times for an estimated R540 per month.
- Their Premier plan is R1 670 (full access to any club, excluding collection clubs)
- There is also a Premier Select for R100 more.
- Collection clubs start at R3600pm depending on location. Virgin Active’s Collection clubs are branded as “luxury” fitness centres.
If you have Discovery Medical Aid and Vitality, you could get a discount of 50-75%, depending on who the primary holder is. While Momentum Multiply Inspire Plus and Engage Plus members save up to 40% monthly.
GYM COMPANY
The Gym Company has branches in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
- White card – R199 per month
- Black card – R299 per month
- Platinum card – R399 per month
PLANET FITNESS
Another popular gym across South Africa is Planet Fitness, with around 50 branches across the country. Gym fees range from R400 to R900 a month over 12-months. Like Virgin Active, this depends on the gym’s location, as different clubs have different fees. For a national membership, to use all clubs in South Africa, it cost around R1500 a month.
Contracts reportedly start at R399. There are various branches across the country. Discovery medical aid holders get up to 75% off local club membership fee. Momentum Multiply Inspire Plus and Engage Plus members get up to 50% off their monthly gym membership fee.
MOOVE GYM
Depending on the location, membership fees start from R150 to R700 per month for a 12-month contract at Moove. There are around 12 Moove clubs nationwide and the club also offers month-to-month contracts.
ZONE FITNESS
Zone Fitness has 24 branches in the provinces of the Western Cape and Gauteng. Here is a breakdown of their gym membership packages.
- Single club access – R399 for 24 months
- Super club access – R449 for 24 months
- Single club access – R699 – month-to-month
