The City of Tshwane has confirmed that its Energy and Electricity business unit will carry out critical maintenance work at the Waltloo Substation on Sunday, 12 October.
The planned power outage maintenance will last six hours, from 8:00 to 14:00, and will require a complete power shutdown in the affected area.
Maintenance aims to prevent major power failures
According to the municipality, the scheduled work is essential to maintain the 132/11kV – 35 MVA Power Transformer A1 and to correct identified defects within the substation. The city emphasised that these repairs are necessary to prevent a serious breakdown.
“The work is obligatory to maintain the 132/1kV – 35MVA Power Transformer A1 and attend to identified defects inside the substation to prevent a catastrophic breakdown,” the City said in a statement.
Officials further explained that abnormalities had been detected in the electrical network, necessitating an urgent shutdown.
“In the interest of safety and existing abnormalities on the network, the city is compelled to shut down power supply to the substation,” the statement continued.
Areas to experience power outage
The maintenance will impact several areas supplied by the Waltloo Substation. These include Waltloo Industrial Area, Asgrow, Wolff-Trebla, Toop and Flush Lane, Gaskof Engineering, Kuit Street, Precision Casting, and Sefatananga – Alwyn Noord.
Residents and business owners in these areas are advised to make alternative power arrangements during the scheduled interruption. The city noted that maintenance of this scale is necessary to ensure the reliability of the electricity supply across Tshwane’s network.
Safety reminders for affected residents
City officials have also issued a safety warning, reminding the public to handle all electrical points with care even during the power outage.
“Residents are urged to always treat all network points as live, including during the electricity supply interruption period,” the statement added.
The city thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during the scheduled work, noting that the maintenance is part of its broader effort to improve infrastructure stability and minimise unplanned outages.
