City of Tshwane announces a 10-hour power outage on Sunday

The City of Tshwane has announced a planned 10-hour power outage scheduled for Sunday, 21 December, as teams carry out emergency repairs on a critical high-voltage power line. The interruption will affect several residential, industrial and commercial areas supplied by three major substations.

According to the city, the Energy and Electricity Business Unit will shut down the Pumulani, Waltloo, and Koedoespoort substations from 8:00 to 18:00. The shutdown will allow technicians to work safely on damaged infrastructure linked to the city’s bulk electricity network.

Emergency repairs on the Tshwane power line

The city said the outage is necessary to address urgent faults on a major transmission line.

“This 10-hour shutdown of electricity supply is necessitated by the need to carry out emergency repairs on a 132kV Rooiwal-Waltloo Eland line 1,” the City of Tshwane said.

Officials explained that the affected line plays a critical role in supplying electricity to several substations in the eastern and northern parts of the capital. Delaying the repairs could increase the risk of unplanned outages or equipment failure, especially during periods of high demand.

The city added that switching off the substations is essential to ensure the safety of technicians working on the network.

Areas expected to be affected

A wide range of areas supplied by the affected 132kV substations will experience power interruptions. These include residential suburbs such as Eersterust, Silverton, Waverly, Sinoville extensions, Lindopark, Montana Park, Montana Tuine and Montana Estates.

Industrial and commercial zones including Waltloo Industrial, Samoor Industrial, Silvertondale, Ford and Samcor, and Kolonnade Retail Park will also be impacted. Key facilities such as the Waterworks Treatment Plant, rail infrastructure supplied by SAR Sub, Kolonnade Mall, N4 Gateway, Pumulani Toll Gate and Doornpoort Toll Gate fall within the affected supply areas.

Rural and peri-urban areas such as Kameeldrift, Derdepoort East and West, Zeekoeigat and Donkerhoek are also listed among the impacted locations.

Safety warning and apology to residents

The City of Tshwane urged residents and businesses to take safety precautions during the outage.

“Residents are urged to always treat all network points as live, including during the electricity supply interruption period,” the city warned.

The city acknowledged the inconvenience the power outage may cause and said teams will work to restore the supply as scheduled.

“The city apologises for the inconvenience that may arise,” the statement said.
