For me, one of the most exciting parts of the announcement of Monster: The Ed Gein Story on Netflix was the news that it would be starring Addison Rae. I love her music of course, because she just dropped the best album of the year. But also despite the fact she had some early panning on her acting roles, she really redeemed herself for me in the excellent slasher Thanksgiving which promised she had the horror chops. In Monster, Addison Rae plays Evelyn Hartley in The Ed Gein Story – who is tragically ill-fated and has to act in some of the most vile scenes in the show. Charlie Hunnam has now revealed how he made the set comfortable for Addison Rae and other cast members who had to film horrific scenes in The Ed Gein Story.
‘Addison is an amazing actor’
The scenes with Evelyn Hartley and Ed Gein are particularly horrific, and feature Addison Rae being murdered by Charlie Hunnam and the corpse of Ed’s dead mother in brutal scenes with a lot of nastiness in them. Obviously, filming such horror is mentally taxing – so Charlie Hunnam explained how they made things more comfortable when creating The Ed Gein Story for actors like Addison Rae.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Charlie Hunnam was asked by the reporter how the team made things comfortable for Addison Rae and other actors when filming The Ed Gein Story. Hunnam replied “Everybody’s process is different and everybody’s comfort level and reaction to the darkness we were bringing to life is different. With Addison, that was one of the darker more challenging scenes and for some reason we just kept laughing. We just kept laughing between takes.
“She’s actually an amazing actor. Great in the character at large, but amazing in that scene. She’d be laughing and then the camera would roll and she’s immediately just pouring tears and screaming and doing such a great job. I’ve got my own process but I also try to be super reflective of everyone else’s process and make it feel super safe for everybody.”
I’m glad that despite The Ed Gein Story being Monster at the most gruelling it’s ever been, at least the set was positive vibes.
