Celebrity Traitors’ Ruth Codd reveals sad reason she chose to have her leg amputated

Actress Ruth Codd is one of the many celebrities taking part in the first ever UK series of The Celebrity Traitors, and she has previously opened up about why she chose to have her leg amputated.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner in 2022, she explained that she injured her leg while playing football 14 years ago, when she was a teenager, and it never healed properly.

“My injury is the greatest challenge I’ve faced in my life so far. I injured it playing soccer at the age of 15. It never healed correctly so until I was 23, I was on and off crutches, getting loads of operations,” she explained. “Because of nerve damage and chronic pain, I chose to get it amputated. It took eight years of my life, constantly going in and out of hospital.”

“My whole life revolved around trying to heal my leg. For years, I didn’t see it getting any better. I was stuck in a really bad mindset and I was pissed off at life. When I made the decision to amputate it, things finally started to turn around. It was a relief. I could get on my life.”

The 29-year-old added: “I was just messing around in school and fell over playing soccer, which is the worst part because I don’t even like soccer. At least I could have gone out in blaze of glory doing something that I loved but – no!”

Her great sense of humour is what got her through the years of medical problems, and Ruth said her ability to make a joke out of just about anything is her “greatest quality”. I’m sure we’ll see more of that on The Celebrity Traitors.

For years, she feared that her injuries meant she was getting left behind and were holding her back in life, but now she’s stopped being scared.

“If you’d have asked me a couple of years ago what scares me the most, it would have been getting left behind. When I was injured, I really felt like life was passing me by. I was scared of everyone moving on with their lives and forgetting about me but that didn’t happen,” she said.
