Keep your home mould free this winter with B&Q’s £1.60 buy – and it’s great for your skin too

BANISH mould from your homes this autumn and winter, with a budget buy from B&Q.

Now that summer is well and truly behind us, you may have noticed that the cold weather has caused condensation to start to appear on your windows.

Aloe vera can suck moisture out of the air[/caption]

Condensation occurs when warm, moist air comes into contact with a cold surface, causing the water vapour in the air to condense into liquid water.

This can then lead to mould growth on walls and ceilings, which can cause a wide variety of health problems, including asthma and rashes.

It can also cause damage to your home and furniture, so it’s best to find the root cause of the issue, and fix it.

A simple trick you can use to prevent condensation is to invest in some moisture sucking houseplants.

Aloe Vera is a popular succulent found in many homes – but homeowners don’t just keep them because of their pretty green leaves.

The clever plants suck up excess moisture from the air, preventing condensation from having the chance to form, and lead to mould.

They work best if placed in the kitchen or bathroom, where there is lots of excess moisture.

B&Q is currently selling a selection of three small aloe vera plants for just £5, making each succulent just £1.60.

The Verve Aloe safari mix in Terracotta Plastic Grow pot’s are super easy to look after, and you don’t need to water them at all between November and March.

Simply place your aloe plant in a room where the temperature is higher than 14 degrees, and rotate it every couple of weeks, for even growth.

Only water the plant when the soil has completely dried out, and don’t allow it to sit in water, as this will damage the roots.

The plants will need re-potting every two to three years, during the spring, using a cacti-succulent compost.

Other uses for aloe vera

Keeping mould at bay isn’t the only thing that aloe vera can do, as the clever plant has a variety of other uses.

The gel inside the leaves of aloe plants can be used to soothe burns, and even contains compounds that speed up the wound healing process.

What is mould and how to get rid of it?

Mould is more likely to grow during the winter months.

Olivia Young, Product Development Scientist at Astonish revealed exactly why this is.

“Unfortunately, mould is a common problem many people face during winter. It thrives in conditions that are warm and damp, so your bathrooms are likely to be the most affected place.

“That said, during the colder months most rooms in your home could be vulnerable to mould growing.

“This occurs primarily from condensation that builds up on your windows when you’ve got your radiators on.

“If you think about it, when windows and doors are closed, there’s not much chance for the air to circulate and the moisture to make a swift exit.

“This build up is what can cause dreaded mould to make an appearance, especially in bathrooms, as it creates that warm and wet environment that is a breeding ground for mould.

“If left untreated, not only is it unsightly but it can also pose a serious risk to your health, so it’s really important you treat it.

“The key to tackle mould is to act fast.

“Try to come into as little contact with it as you can. So, grab your gloves, tie up your hair and get to work to remove any signs of mould as soon as you notice them.

“To keep mould at bay, there are some simple solutions you can introduce throughout home.

“The first is keep it ventilated. Yes, even in the cold winter months try to leave your bathroom window open for at least 10/15 minutes post shower or bath. This will get rid of any excess moisture quickly preventing mould gathering.

“If you’re having a repeat problem with mould in one particular area, it might be because the humidity levels are too high. You can get a dehumidifier that will help keep the levels low and reduce the risk of mould returning.

“The golden rule to remember when dealing with mould is the quicker you can treat it, the better. If you leave it, it will only get worse so never ignore it!

“To successfully get rid of mould every time, I recommend opting for the UK’s No 1 Mould & Mildew Remover, that effectively removes mould and mildew stains almost instantly, with no scrubbing necessary.”

The clever leaves can also be used to moisturise the skin, and many people also use them to calm the digestive tract and promote regular bowel movements.

How to get rid of mould

If you already have mould growing in your home then don’t worry, as you can get rid of it with some bleach and a bit of kitchen roll.

The best part is you don’t need to break the bank to get your hands on it either, since hydrogen peroxide can be bought from B&Q for just £8.99.

Of course, you won’t need to use a full bottle since you’ll only need to cover the affected areas, meaning the trick will work out to as little as 30p.

First decant 6% Hydrogen Peroxide into a spray bottle and spritz any areas with black mould.

Then line the same areas with kitchen roll and spray again before waiting 30 minutes to remove everything – you should make sure to wear gloves when using hydrogen peroxide as well.

Finish up by rinsing the same area thoroughly and you’ll be left with a bathroom that looks as good as new.

Huge UK garden centre announces sudden closure as it launches ‘final clearance’ sale

A HUGE garden centre in the UK is set to close after launching a “final clearance” sale.

The independent store, which also boasts a cafe, made the announcement on social media.

The Bellflower Garden Centre is to close in October

In a blow to shoppers and gardening enthusiasts, the Bellflower Garden Centre in Ipswich said in a statement it is to close in October.

This follows a string of garden centre closures this year.

Local garden centre Webb’s, located in Bearwood, West Mids, which has been passed down through five generations, announced it was shuttering after 105 years.

Meanwhile, Dobbies, a major garden centre chain, also announced it was closing almost all of its stores for an entire 24-hour period in April.

This followed an announcement in 2024 that it was axing 12 stores, with another, Hare Hatch, in Berkshire, shutting up shop on January 31, 2025.

Bellflower is now holding a sale to clear its stock, which includes British-grown plants, supplements, bedding, and garden accessories.

With a huge range of animal feeds, the centre is also popular with pet owners in the area.

The announcement was made on Facebook

A statement posted on Facebook reads: “The garden centre will be closing down by the end of October.

“Most lines are already reduced to clear, and the rest will be added over the next couple of weeks, so head on over to grab some bargains!”

The news of the closure and sale was met with dismay among customers, with many posting messages of support for the owners.

Customer support

One person wrote on Facebook: “So sorry to hear this.

“I wish you all the best for your next venture.”

Another person wrote: “Really sorry to hear this Gareth.

“Best of luck for whatever comes next. Thank you for looking after us horsey people so well!”

A third person posted: “That is such a shame!”

A fourth person said: “Oh no. Sorry to hear this.”

Sign of the times

The closure of the Bellflower Garden Centre is another sign of the difficulties facing small businesses in the UK, with the high street particularly affected by a £40bn hike in tax earlier this year and the rise of online shopping.

Several brands have been forced to shutter shops this year after running costs soared.

Just this month, charity shop chain Scope closed three stores after shuttering more than 50 shops this year.

The closures come after a consultation process earlier this year.

In total, the chain is considering shutting 77 of its 138 shops across the country.

The Original Factory Shop has also closed a string of stores this year.

Among them is its shop in Inverness, which has launched a 50 per cent off closing down sale.

Meanwhile, New Look has shut scores of stores after it called in advisers to carry out a strategic review of the fashion chain.

Why are retailers closing shops?

EMPTY shops have become an eyesore on many British high streets and are often symbolic of a town centre’s decline.

The Sun’s business editor Ashley Armstrong explains why so many retailers are shutting their doors.

In many cases, retailers are shutting stores because they are no longer the money-makers they once were because of the rise of online shopping.

Falling store sales and rising staff costs have made it even more expensive for shops to stay open.

The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury’s hike to employer NICs from April 2025, will cost the retail sector £2.3billion.

At the same time, the minimum wage will rise to £12.21 an hour from April, and the minimum wage for people aged 18-20 will rise to £10 an hour, an increase of £1.40.

In some cases, retailers are shutting a store and reopening a new shop at the other end of a high street to reflect how a town has changed.

The problem is that when a big shop closes, footfall falls across the local high street, which puts more shops at risk of closing.

Retail parks are increasingly popular with shoppers, who want to be able to get easy, free parking at a time when local councils have hiked parking charges in towns.

Many retailers including Next and Marks & Spencer have been shutting stores on the high street and taking bigger stores in better-performing retail parks instead.

In some cases, stores have been shut when a retailer goes bust, as in the case of Carpetright, Debenhams, Dorothy Perkins, Paperchase, Ted Baker, The Body Shop, Topshop and Wilko to name a few.

What’s increasingly common is when a chain goes bust a rival retailer or private equity firm snaps up the intellectual property rights so they can own the brand and sell it online.

They may go on to open a handful of stores if there is customer demand, but there are rarely ever as many stores or in the same places.

The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.

That includes just 15 minutes on the table, a 20-second shot clock, ball in hand for fouls, and “sudden-death” blue ball shootouts to handle ties.

In the launch week, Pluto will be showing snooker legends including Jimmy White, Ken Doherty, and Michaela Tabb.

And the channel is also supported English snooker giant Ronnie O’Sullivan.

“Snooker has been my whole life, but sometimes I look around and wonder where the next bright, young superstar is going to come from,” snooker legend Ronnie said.

“Young players don’t always get the chance to play under the lights or in front of the cameras, and that’s why Snooker 900 is so important.

“This channel gives them a proper stage, whether it’s women, juniors or disabled players, and puts real money back into the amateur game.

Nicole Kidman ‘blindsided’ by Keith Urban split and was pictured with wedding ring on just days ago

NICOLE Kidman was ‘blindsided’ by her split from Keith Urban and was even pictured with her wedding ring on just mere days ago.

The sad news of Nicole and Keith’s split broke on Monday, with TMZ first to report on their broken down marriage.

The outlet shared that insiders had revealed the Hollywood stars had taken a break from their union, with them having been living separately “since the beginning of summer”.

Nicole, 58, is said to have been blindsided by her split from Keith, 57.

She was even seen with her wedding ring on just mere days ago.

The famous actress appeared happy and upbeat as she attended Cle de Peau’s event in Los Angeles as the new brand ambassador – with her wedding band firmly on her ring finger.

At the event, Nicole looked fresh-faced as she posed up a storm while wearing a figure-hugging black gown.

Her wedding ring was on display, with her seemingly batting her marriage woes away.

Since their split was unveiled, a source also revealed that the couple’s two children have been in Nicole’s care as the actress is “holding the family together through this difficult time since Keith has been gone.”

It is currently still unknown what led to the pair’s separation.

Sources claim that it was not Nicole’s idea, with her blindsided, as she had been wanting to save their relationship.

Insiders also said that “Keith has acquired his own residence in Nashville and has moved out of their family home.”

The pair resided with their daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Nicole is also a mom to two older children, whom she adopted during her marriage with her ex-husband, Tom Cruise, 63.

Although the couple remained tight-lipped about their split, Nicole had spent a considerable amount of time in England – which may have put strain on their relationship.

The famous actress had been in the UK filming the Practical Magic sequel and reportedly shelled out $87,288 a month to stay at Boy George’s luxurious mansion – without Keith.

A source told Women’s Day about their arrangement, “They do make an effort to speak every day when they’re apart, but it’s shocking how much time they’ve spent apart since Nicole’s mother died last September.”

List of ‘banned’ baby names in UK rejected for being too extreme – is yours on there?

CERTAIN ‘banned’ baby names have been rejected in the UK for being too extreme.

Parents mostly have freedom when deciding their newborns’ names – but there are some caveats.

Some ‘banned’ baby names have been rejected in the UK[/caption]

This decision making is for a very specific reason[/caption]

However, the UK Deed Poll Office has strict rules to prevent some names being registered.

It serves to protect children from potential subsequent ridicule or harm.

Some real rejected names include Cyanide, due to its connotations to poison

Another example is Martian, as a result of caution about ridicule.

Princess and King have also been refused due to being potentially mistaken for a title.

On their website, the UK Deed Poll Office states: “While we don’t have an official list of banned names, we assess applications on a case-by-case basis, and names that could cause a child harm or confusion will likely be rejected.”

Some countries have strict laws when naming babies – with parents having to choose from an approved list.

Earlier this year, the top baby names in England and Wales were announced.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed Muhammad once again took the top spot.

In 2024, over 5,721 boys were called Muhammad, with this specific spelling.

Meanwhile, the name Noah took place, with a total of 4,139 babies altogether.

Rounding out the top five boys; names were Oliver (3,492), Arthur (3,368) and Leo (3,324).

As well as this, the top 10 also included George, Luca, Theodore, Oscar and Archie.

On the girls’ side, Olivia again emerged as most popular with 2,761 babies receiving this name.

Baby names banned around the world

Depending on where you live in the world, there are some names you can’t give a newborn.

Hungary and Iceland, for instance, are just two of a number of countries where parents have to choose their baby names from an approved list.

In other countries, there are strict laws in place around names using traditional spellings.

Metallica – Swedish parents tried to give their daughter an ode to their favourite heavy metal band in 2007 – but officials disallowed this, deeming it inappropriate. However, after public outcry, authorities withdrew their objections, NME reported.

Tom – Parents having a baby in Portugal best to check out the list of approved names to choose from. Nicknames are not allowed as a full, formal name – so while Tomás is okay, Tom isn’t.

Nutella A court in Valenciennes, France, decided in 2015 that a couple would not be allowed to name their daughter Nutella, Yahoo! previously reported.

FacebookThe state of Sonora in Mexico banned a couple from naming their baby Facebook in 2014 because they deemed it “derogatory, pejorative, discriminatory or lacking in meaning”, The Guardian reported at the time.

IKEAParents in Sweden wanting to name their children after the country’s Scandinavian-inspired superstore could face an obstacle with the country’s naming law, which was enacted in 1982, according to Mental Floss.

J When a pair tried to pay tribute to their grandparents, Johanna and Josef, with the name J, the court in Switzerland suggested using Jo instead, Swiss Info reported.

Gesher  In 1998, a Norwegian woman landed in jail for two days when she failed to pay a fine for giving her son an “unapproved” name – Gesher, which is Hebrew for bridge, according to The Week.

Saint – Kim Kardashian and Kanye West chose this name for their son, but the ex-couple may have had less luck in New Zealand.  In 2024, one set of parents had this name rejected by the naming officials within the government.

Daemon – In 2012, a French couple wanted to name their child after the character of Damon from the popular series The Vampire Diaries.

The pair added an ‘e’ to give it more French twist – but despite their best efforts, authorities banned it for sounding too demonic, as per Huffington Post.

However, after a court battle, the parents were allowed to keep the name.

Olivia has held the crown for the top-ranked baby girl name since 2016.

Second place also hadn’t changed, with 2,448 babies being called Amelia.

This was then followed by Lily (2,185),Isla (2,056) and Ivy (1,956) to complete the top five.

The top 10 also featured Florence, Freya, Poppy, Ava and Elsie.

They also revealed that their kids have been in Nicole’s care as she’s been “holding the family together through this difficult time since Keith has been gone”.

In November 2018, Nicole made a rare public statement about her children’s involvement with the religion.

She said: “They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them.”

Speaking to WHO Magazine, she added: “I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe – that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here.”

Sunday Rose Kidman Urban

Kidman and Urban had their first child together, Sunday Rose, in 2008.

Nicole posted a photo her with Sunday Rose and Keith to Instagram on July, 2018, to celebrate her 10th birthday.

Faith Margaret Kidman Urban

Faith Margaret was born via a surrogate on December 28, 2010, in Nashville, People reported.

Kidman’s two children have both featured in her projects and even got some screen time in an HBO series she starred in.

The sisters appeared in 2020 crime thriller series The Undoing in which Hugh Grant also starred.

Speaking to news.com.au. in 2020, Kidman said: “They’re used to being extras, but they did five days in the freezing New York cold, never complained, and didn’t get any special treatment.”

Iconic European stadium free to be DEMOLISHED in £197million project and replaced by state-of-the-art new arena

The LEGENDARY San Siro stadium is officially on borrowed time with Inter and AC Milan now free to tear it down and build a dazzling new home.

In a historic ruling, Milan’s city council has voted in favour of selling the iconic ground to the two Serie A giants in a deal worth £197million.

The decision will pave the way for demolition and a brand-new, state-of-the-art arena.

It brings an end to years of wrangling over the future of the famous stadium and marks the start of a bold new era for football in the city.

Inter and AC Milan — long-time co-tenants at the San Siro — will now own the historic venue outright.

That gives them the green light to knock it down and build from scratch. Talks have long been ongoing to either revamp or replace the ageing structure.

The new stadium is expected to boast cutting-edge facilities, increased commercial opportunities and a world-class match day experience — something both clubs have craved to keep pace with Europe’s elite.

The San Siro — officially known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza — has hosted countless iconic moments, including World Cups, Champions League thrillers, and fierce Milan derbies since opening in 1926.

Among the Champions League finals, the most recent was Real Madrid defeating Atletico there in 2016, which Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the decisive penalty.

It also hosted the final in 1965, 1970 and 2001.

RYDER CUP 2025 BETTING TIPS, FREE BETS AND LATEST ODDS

But now, its fate is sealed.

Originally built nearly a century ago, the San Siro is famous for its distinctive spiral staircases and towering concrete presence. It was most recently renovated for the 1990 World Cup — but now lags behind modern European venues in terms of comfort and technology.

Last week, Inter and Milan hired architectural powerhouses Foster + Partners and Manica to design the new 71,500-seat arena, which will form part of a broader urban redevelopment project including commercial and residential buildings.

The ambitious plan has been in discussion since 2019, but faced years of delays due to opposition from politicians, preservationists, and local community groups who viewed the stadium as a temple of Italian football.

But with the city council now on board, the dream of a new stadium is finally within reach — and demolition day could come sooner than expected.

Fans are likely to be split — some mourning the loss of a beloved football cathedral, others embracing a future built for global competition.
