Sam Gardiner was involved in the second series of the hit BBC One factual entertainment programme.

He appeared on the show alongside his mum Jo, where the pair came in fourth place as they tried to make it to Argentina from Mexico.

They were forced to withdraw from the travel game after they ran out of money to finish the seventh leg.

At the end of tonight’s episode, the programme paid tribute to the former contestant with an end card after the credits.

Producers displayed a poignant picture of Sam when he was on Race Across The World in his backpacking gear.

The caption that was emblazoned on the screen read: “In loving memory of Sam Gardiner.

“2000-2025.”

Viewers took to X – formerly known as Twitter – as they were left in tears by the slide and praised the corporation for their end of episode tribute.

One user remarked: “Lovely tribute to Sam at the end.”

A second posted the same displayed image on the screen as they wrote: “RIP Sam.”

“Rest in peace to Sam Gardiner, who took part in series 2 with his Mum, Jo, back in 2020,” commented a third viewer.

While a fourth said: “They gave Sam Gardiner an end card. Sad.”

And a fifth user added: “The tribute to Sam Gardiner,” along with a crying face emoji.

On Monday night, Sam had been driving on the A34 near Manchester.

  • Series one: Elaine and Tony Teasdale: This married couple, who are retired PE teachers, won the very first series of Race Across The World.
  • Series two: Emon and Jamiul Choudhury: The uncle and nephew duo emerged victorious in the show’s second outing.
  • Series three: Tricia Sail and Cathie Rowe: These lifelong friends became the first non-familial pair to win a series.

Greater Manchester Police said his car suddenly left the road and rolled over before it eventually landed on its side.

In an emotional tribute, his father Andrew said: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved son Sam in a terrible accident.

“Sam left us far too soon, and whilst words will never fully capture the light, joy and energy he brought into our lives, we hold on to the memories that made him so special.

“Sam was adored by his family. As a son, brother and nephew, he was loyal, funny and fiercely protective.”

Half a million more kids will be entitled to free school meals in massive expansion of the scheme

HALF a million more kids will be entitled to free school meals under a massive expansion of the scheme, Sir Keir Starmer announced last night.

Every child in a household on Universal Credit will now be eligible for state sponsored lunches, in a move that should lift 100,000 children out of poverty.

Expanding free school meals will save parents on benefits £500 per child every year, according to the Department for Education.

Kids in UC households currently not eligible will be able to start claiming lunches from the start of the 2026 school year.

The entitlement will apply in all settings where free school meals are available, including school-based nurseries and further-education settings.

Most parents will be able to apply before the start of the new school year by providing a national insurance number.

Education Secretary Bridget Philipson told The Sun the move is critical for ending the post-pandemic school attendance crisis and cracking down on bad behaviour.

She said: “What we’re announcing is a game changer.

“This will make a big difference to children’s attendance and behaviour at school because we know that if kids are hungry, they don’t concentrate well.

“Sun will benefit directly from saving £500 per child per year.”

Since 2018 kids have only been eligible for free meals if their household income is less than £7,400 per year.

The major expansion comes ahead of the government’s Child Poverty Taskforce publishing a ten-year strategy to drive down poverty.

It also follows mounting pressure on the PM from rebel Labour MPs to scrap the two-child benefit cap.

Sir Keir said: “Working parents across the country are working tirelessly to provide for their families but are being held back by cost-of-living pressures.

“My government is taking action to ease those pressures.

“Feeding more children every day, for free, is one of the biggest interventions we can make to put more money in parents’ pockets, tackle the stain of poverty, and set children up to learn.”

Big-hearted Cristiano Ronaldo laughs it off after fan in wheelchair accidentally drives into him

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S attitude towards fans can’t be knocked – even when they accidentally knock him!

The Manchester United legend won new admirers for the way he dealt with a supporter catching him on the shin with his wheelchair.

Ronaldo appeared to have fun over the incident

Viewers loved the amusing exchange as Ronaldo ended up with a smile almost as big as his bank balance.

It began an eventful night for Ronaldo, who was outside Portugal’s team hotel at the time of the ‘collision’.

The Al-Nassr striker was later grabbed by a pitch invader as he warmed up at Bayern’s Allianz Arena to face Germany in the Nations League semi-final.

And he then drilled Portugal’s clincher in a 2-1 comeback win – thanks to his 137th international goal midway through the second half.

Understandably the 40-year-old looked ecstatic.

But he had been in high spirits too during his earlier hotel encounter.

Wearing shorts and training gear, Ronaldo walked over to sign an autograph.

But as he was preparing to scribble his name, the fan’s wheelchair nudged forward and hit the five-time Ballon d’Or winner on the right leg.

Ronaldo rubbed his shin as he smiled before sharing a joke with the fan.

It’s just possible the ex-Real Madrid winger was mischievously pretending to have been fouled – because contact had looked minimal.

He then finished penning his signature before posing for a selfie with the man.

One fan responded to the clip on social media by saying: “Massive respect to CR7 who made the supporters day.”

Another viewer wrote: “Ronaldo down to earth.”

And a third posted: “I have to respect him for this.”

Many fans still relentlessly argue online over Ronaldo’s GOAT claims compared to those of Lionel Messi.

But Ron’s ‘bumpy’ moment even earned grudging backing from supporters of his great rival.

One said: “As someone who prefers Messi’s play style this is why you gotta respect Ronaldo, class human being.”
