Cape Winelands Airport takes massive stride towards 2028 opening

Cape Winelands Airport is officially on its way toward development, after receiving some much-anticipated news.

The airport has now received Environmental Authorisation (EA) from the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEADP).

This marks a major step forward in the airport’s multi-billion-rand development.

Cape Winelands Airport gets green light

“The granting of Environmental Authorisation is an important validation of the extensive work and consultation that has gone into ensuring this project meets the highest environmental and community standards,” Deon Cloete, MD of Cape Winelands Airport, said.

“We are mighty pleased with this positive outcome and grateful for all the support and encouragement received over the years. This is truly a milestone made possible with the support of our stakeholders, partners and the community”. Cloete also said.

Scheduled to open in 2028, the new airport will receive an initial R8 billion investment to fund its first phase, which includes terminal buildings, a 3.5-kilometre realigned runway, and a 450-hectare aviation precinct.

The plans outline a boutique terminal featuring modern check-in counters, spacious passenger lounges, as well as a curated selection of retail options.

Supporting infrastructure will include taxiways, aircraft parking stands, refuelling systems, cargo facilities, and landscaped parking areas.

The estate will also host hotels and a conference centre, placing the airport as a key regional hub for both travel and business.

Following the EA approval, Cape Winelands Airport will move ahead with detailed planning and compliance processes as required by DEADP before breaking ground, which is currently projected for late 2025.
