Cape Town rolls out drive-through licence renewals

The City of Cape Town is calling on motorists to renew their vehicle licence discs early to avoid the year-end rush. Every November and December, customer centres experience a surge in activity as residents prepare for the festive break.

“The City aims to make renewing your licence disc as easy and convenient as possible ahead of the year-end rush,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Councillor Siseko Mbandezi.

Furthermore, motorists can now book their licence renewal appointments online in under a minute. The system provides a reference number, ensuring priority service at customer centres across the metro. Additionally, residents receive SMS reminders with a direct link to the online booking platform, thereby reducing the time spent waiting in long queues.

Brackenfell’s new licence renewal drive-through facility

To make the process even faster, the city has introduced a drive-through licence renewal facility in Brackenfell. Also, the innovative service allows motorists to renew their discs without leaving their vehicles, in as little as five minutes.

“Motorists are reminded to visit the brand new Brackenfell drive-through facility to renew their licence discs before the busy festive season,” Mbandezi added.

The Brackenfell facility operates from Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 19:00, and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 14:00. From 20 October, these hours will be adjusted based on customer demand. Only card payments are accepted on-site.

More innovations on the way

As agents for the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the city is planning further improvements to enhance customer convenience. Officials are exploring extended weekday operating hours and additional drive-through sites in other parts of Cape Town.

“Over the next few months, we will explore additional suitable drive-through facilities and other innovations to make the city the leading licensing and renewal agent,” the city confirmed.

With more motorists taking advantage of digital systems and quick-service options, the city hopes to minimise congestion at its licensing offices during the upcoming festive period.
