Cape Town is bracing for another busy summer, and the city is treating safety as its top priority.
With beaches expected to fill up from early December, officials have rolled out a major seasonal plan.
This beach safety plan will be aimed at keeping residents and visitors safe in and around the water.
Cape Town gets summer-ready
According to Getaway, the city has assigned 340 lifeguards to beaches, tidal pools and coastal zones, with another 343 stationed at public swimming pools.
All teams will operate daily from 10:00 to 18:00 throughout the festive period.
Lifeguards will also work alongside enforcement officers, CCTV monitors, drone teams and beach patrol units. The goal is to prevent drownings, protect children and uphold a strict no alcohol policy on public beaches.
A major initiative returning this season is the IdentiKidz programme, where children receive wristbands printed with their guardians’ phone numbers.
The system proved vital last year, helping reunite more than 120 000 children with their families. Officials expect even more families to use the programme this summer.
The city’s festive plan also extends well beyond its beaches. More than four thousand uniformed staff will be deployed across Cape Town, supported by seven hundred new officers who will cover busy nodes, beaches and major routes.
Highway patrol teams will run around the clock, and a dedicated forty-member unit will focus on the N2 corridor.
