Botswana hands Letsile Tebogo new home for his Olympic triumph

Botswana’s sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo has officially received the new home promised to him after winning gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Botswana Athletics Association announced on Tuesday that Tebogo inspected his newly constructed three-bedroom house.

This marked the fulfilment of the government’s pledge to reward his historic 200m victory.

The government of Botswana fully funded the property, valued at BWP 2.3 million (approximately R3.34 million), as part of its incentive package for top-performing athletes.

A Home Built to Letsile Tebogo’s Preference

The Association said Time Projects developed the house from the ground up after Tebogo personally chose the location and approved the architectural design.

Construction kicked off following a groundbreaking ceremony in October 2024. The officials described it as the beginning of “an enduring legacy project for the young champion.”

Letsile Tebogo’s rewards extend beyond individual glory

Tebogo’s achievements in Paris extended beyond the 200m gold medal.

He benefited as part of Botswana’s men’s 4x400m relay team that claimed silver at the Games. He also benefited from the relay team’s incentive package.

“Each member of the silver-winning relay team, including Tebogo, received a two-bedroom apartment, which they have already moved into,” the Association said.

Botswana government reaffirms support for athletes

The Ministry of Sports and Arts spearheaded the initiative. They partnered with the Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) and the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC).

Botswana’s Honourable Minister of Sport and Arts, Mr. Jacob Kelebeng, officiated the event, joined by several dignitaries, including BNSC Chairperson Mr. Marumo Morule, BNOC President Mr. Tshepo Sitale, acting BAA President Mr. Oabona Theetso, and a representative of Tebogo’s family.

Authorities said the gesture reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to celebrating and rewarding elite athletes.

They added that Tebogo’s recognition serves as “an inspiration to the next generation of sportsmen and women who aspire to represent the nation at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and beyond.”
