Blitzboks survive France scare to book spot in Cup final

The Blitzboks narrowly beat France 22-17 to progress to the Cup final of the Cape Town Sevens on Sunday.

South Africa will face Argentina in title match where their will look to defend the crown they had won last year in the Mother City. The final is scheduled to kick off at 4:43pm on Sunday.

FIRST HALF RECAP: BLITZBOKS SET THE TONE EARLY

The Blitzboks seized charge of the game from the outset and never relinquished that control although there were some nervy moments.

A try double by Shilton van Wyk and Tristan Leyds gave the Blitzboks an early 10-point buffer.

With France looking down and out, a couple of penalties their way brought them right back into the contest as they earned territorial gain and from there scored to half South Africa’s lead.

van Wyk reinstated the Blitzboks’ handy lead, but France continued to stay in the fight with another well-worked converted try for a 17-12 half-time score.

SECOND HALF RECAP: FRANCE PUSH SOUTH AFRICA ALL THE WAY

France came out firing in the second half, gliding straight through the Blitzboks defensive line for a five-pointer to tie things up at 17 apiece.

From there, the two teams went toe to toe but neither could land the final blow; that was until the Blitzboks burrowed over late.

Before that though, South Africa were rightly aggrieved for a high and reckless hit on Leyds at a ruck, but the match officials ruled the collision was within the laws.

With a minute left and the scores level, the French went all out attack, but the Blitzboks defence stood firm, forcing an error. The ball squirted loose and Zain Davids pounced to secure possession. They recycled quickly and Oosthuizen scuttled away for the winning try.
